A setting steeped in history

The vast Place des Jacobins takes its name from the convent that once occupied the space. But long before that, the site had been chosen by the first settlers of the Gallo-Roman era. Today, with its gardens, cultural centre and immense esplanade, it’s a central hub of life in the city. Ideally located on the edge of the Cité Plantagenêt old town and its medieval streets lined with half-timbered houses, the square is dominated by the magnificent Gothic apse of the Cathedral of Saint-Julien. On Wednesday and Sunday mornings, the city’s largest market takes place in this splendid setting.
