The Night of the Chimeras; a unique event
The city of Le Mans boasts a superb historic quarter that is soon to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; the Cité Plantagenêt. These 20 hectares of medieval and Renaissance streets lined with wonderful old buildings become even more enchanting during the nights of July and August. It’s the Nuit des Chimères (Night of the Chimeras) ...
The Night of the Chimeras in a few words
As night falls in July and August, the facades of the most beautiful buildings of the Cité Plantagenêt become projection screens for gorgeously hued images like stained glass that tell fascinating stories from legend and history. Chimeras, gargoyles and other mythical beasts will be your guides. The event is completely free, and you can explore it all at your own pace amidst a setting of unreal beauty.
Eight places, eight stories
Start your pilgrimage by meeting chimeras on the walls of the Cathedral of Saint-Julien, a marvel of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Follow them up the flying buttresses to the pinnacles of this magnificent holy place in a whirl of angels and demons. Then meet the White Lady, a mysterious figure some will recognise as Berengaria of Navarre, the widow of King Richard I of England, who settled in Le Mans. Finally, discover strange creatures spawned by centuries of fertile imaginations capering on the medieval walls. The scene is like a waking dream, with the colours and paintings highlighting the beauty and elegance of the Cité Plantagenêt’s buildings.
Your Hotel Le Mans Country Club invites you to discover a unique and magical event that uses the stunning backdrop of the Cité Plantagenêt to bring to life the people and creatures that populate our culture, history and imagination.
